‘I am an architect’: Students’ Work on Display
Students’ work under the heading of ‘I am an architect’ was put on display in the school’s foyer. Mrs. Paunka Yordanova, PhD had set a task for the students of 9B in one of their Maths lessons which was to be solved in three phases.
First, every student had to build a model of a bridge, tunnel or skateboard ramp using a material of their choice (wood, modeling clay, carton, fibran, etc.) and include the parabolic curve of the square function as well as straight lines (linear function). The model had to be placed in its natural surroundings – grass, trees, a river, vehicles and people.
In the second phase, the students had to take a picture of their model from a suitable perspective and then, by means of dynamic drawing software, they were to build a coordinate system and derive equations for the straight and curved lines of the model.
In the third phase, the students were asked to prepare a good presentation of the project.
The purpose of the projects was to show how applicable Maths is in real life. They enhanced students’ motivation and helped their personal development as citizens of the world. The projects were assessed against IB MYP assessment criteria whose implementation in the national curriculum in grades 9 and 10 is what PSHS “American College Arcus” Ltd. strives for as an innovative school, one of the leading providers of quality education in the country.
