Through combining the educational methods of the National programme and the Diploma programme of the International Baccalaureate we explore the lengths the innovative education could go to through collaborating the students' subject knowledge with experim

On the 09.03.2022. PSHS American college Arcus held an innovative lesson on “Applications of theoretical and experimental methods of the IB graduation programme for the profileeducation in natural sciences.” Students from IXc, XIc and XIIa partook in the lesson which was split into two parts. In it’s first part the students who fell under the guidance of Mrs Silvana Tabakova and Mr Ilian Yordanov worked on evaluating oxi-reduction reactions and applying mathematical and chemical methods for equalizingchemical equations.

The second part was focused on the application of oxi-reduction processes in the cellular metabolism. The students involved in the project, alongside their teacher - Mrs Jena Staykova, showed great enthusiasm while researching and proving experimentally the oxi-reduction reactions in the implementation of lactic acid and alcohol fermentation as part of the processes of a cell’s metabolism. The obtained results were collected, processed and analysed by the students using their knowledge and skills in biology, chemistry, mathematics and statistics. The methods used for conducting a scientific experiment by asking a research question, formulating a hypothesis, analysing quantities and experimental results, as well as drawing a conclusion, showcase the inseparable nature of the natural sciences and their connection to all the other branches of the science field.

The combination between national and international standards in the profile education in natural sciences reveals the potential for increasing the quality and effectiveness of the educational process.
