When I was a little boy

Georgi Obretenov, 11 IB

When I was a little boy I practiced swimming and thought that that was going to be my sport “for life” as I liked saying at that time. One day, however, a man came during a Sports class at school and asked a few of the boys if they wanted to try out basketball. I wasn’t asked as I was not tall back then. After that man, who I later understood was the coach of the small kids playing basketball in our school, left, we continued with our class, but by the end of it my teacher asked me if I wanted to try out basketball.

I wanted to try it and so did a classmate of mine, Stefan. We both went and started playing. At first I practiced both swimming and basketball, but later decided that basketball suited me better and I stuck with it. And so I have been playing basketball for around 5 years now and I can say that it is a very interesting sport and I am happy that I chose it over swimming. It’s not that I didn’t have a talent for swimming, quite the contrary in fact – my swimming coach had predicted a successful career for me in the sport had I continued with it. I am actually the “sports type” of guy, willing to participate in any physical activity. I don’t want to sound too proud and with an unhealthy amount of self-esteem, but I can be good in any sport I choose to participate in.

Above all, though, I choose basketball – and I am happy I did once.
